Nursing Education

 
The ICU nursing education activities started in 2004 with the in-house program – Critical Care Program . With the opening of the Mrs Lee Kong Chian Critical Care Nursing Simulation Laboratory in 26 May 2009, the education focus expanded to include simulation training, invasive catheterization laboratory, general ward nursing training and life support training. The educator group has 7 teaching members.

Short Programmes

 

Critical Care nursing Programme & Advance Critical Care Nursing Programme (CCNP & ACCNP)

The programme is intended for current & potential critical care nurses and it provides an opportunity for clinical practice in the specialized critical care environment. The content is delivered through didactic apporach and hands-on workshop.
 
Internal course participants should be a registered nurse with at least 1 year post-registration critical care experience. Employment in a critical care setting is required for locally sponsored external course participants.
 

Cardiac & Cardiothoracic-Vascular Nursing Programme (CCTVNP)

The programme is cardiac focused, pitched at the Med/Surg nursing level. Internal course participants are required to work in the cardiac care areas during the course of study to facilitate concepts application in clinical practice.
 
The programme includes a module on Cardiac Rehabilitation. Clinical attachment for procedure observation and case follow-through provides a better understanding of the cardiac care continuum.
 

Invasive Cardiac Laboratory Nursing Programme (ICLNP) 

The ICLN programme is developed for nursing staff working in the invasive cardiac catheterization areas. Internal course participants are required to work in the invasive cardiac catheterisation area during the course of study so as to facilitate concepts application in cardiac catheterisation.
 
This programme can be customized for external participants who has a minimal 1 year work experience in the catheterization laboratory area.
 
 

 

Continuing Nursing Education

 

ECG Rhythm Interpretation and Arrhythmia Management

This is an introductory refresher programme on ECG rhythm interpretation. The programme includes cardiac conduction, the ECG paper, calculating heart rate, normal sinus rhythm criteria, cardiac rhythm identification: atrial and ventricular rhythms, heart blocks, and lethal arrhythmias and managing these arrhythmias.
 

12-Lead ECG Rhythm Interpretation and Managing Chest Pain

The programme reviews the pathophysiology of ACS. It includes chest pain assessment and management and interpretation of 12-lead ECG, ST changes, Bundle Branch Blocks, Hypertrophy are discussed.
 

Physical Assessment for Nurses

The physical assessment programme aims to strengthen nurses’ skills in patient physical assessment; and identification of physiological changes based on assessment findings.

  • Neurological assessment
  • Abdominal assessment
  • Integrated physical assessment
 
The course includes clinical physical assessment in the patient care setting.
 

Heart Sounds & Murmur Workshop

The full day workshop introduces learners to the various aspects of cardiac auscultation and identifying different types of murmur. The hands-on practice is facilitated by the use of either the Harvey Simulator or SimMan 3G Simulator.
 
 

 

Life Support Training (NRC accredited)

 

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Providers Course

The AED providers course certifies competency in the use of AED. Successful providers will become a certified AED provider with a 2-year certification. The validity can be renewed.
 
Customized corporate group training is available for CPR+AED. Please call to enquire.
 

Life Support Course for Nurses (LSCN) Providers Course

The LSCN providers course is a simplified version of ACLS that educates advanced care providers on 3 algorithms – Ventricular fibrillation/Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia, Pulseless Electrical Activity and Asystole algorithms. Algorithm standards are adapted from the American Heart Association.
 
The megacode station assesses one’s ability to lead the crisis management using standardized algorithm. 
 
Successful providers will become certified LSCN providers with a 2-year certification validity that can be renewed.
 

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Instructor Course

The BCLS instructor course focuses on training on current BCLS providers who are motivated to instruct BCLS skills. **
 
 

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Instructor Course

The AED instructor course focuses on training current AED providers who are motivated to instruct AED skills. **
 
 

Life Support Course for Nurses (LSCN) Instructor Course

The LSCN instructor course focuses on training current LSCN providers who are motivated to instruct the LSCN providers course. **
 
 
** Successful instructor course candidates can renew instructorship status by teaching the relevant providers course at a minimum of 2 courses per year.
