Dr Jimmy Hon is a consultant surgeon with the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery of National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). He is fully registered as a specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery with both the United Kingdom General Medical Council and the Singapore Medical Council.
Asst Prof Hon graduated from The University of Bristol Medical School in the United Kingdom in 1996. He started his career as a research fellow pursuing basic science research under the direction of the world-renowned heart surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub in London. As a young researcher, he was one of the Principle Investigators who secured a prestigious British Heart Foundation project grant totaling £178,800. His research has led to numerous significant scientific publications.
He began his surgical training with the London St. Mary's Hospital Basic Surgical Training rotation and attained the Membership of The Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS (Eng)) and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd) in 2003. He then went on to secure a position in the highly competitive UK Calman specialist training program in Cardiothoracic Surgery and completed six years of intensive training in London to become a fully trained heart and lung surgeon. During his specialist training, Dr Hon worked in many prestigious and leading hospitals in London including The Royal Brompton Hospital, The London Chest Hospital, St. Bartholomew's Hospital and Guy's Hospital. He was able to acquire extensive clinical experience in treating a broad range of heart and lung conditions. In 2008, he was awarded the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery (FRCS (C-Th)) and in 2009, he received his United Kingdom Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). After receiving his UK CCT, Dr. Hon embarked on an advance Cardiac Surgery Fellowship to pursue his subspecialty interest in minimally invasive aortic valve surgery in Vancouver, Canada. During his fellowship, he personally performed numerous Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) under the supervision of Dr. Anson Cheung and Dr. John Webb who are both pioneers in this technology. In addition, Dr Hon performed many aortic valve replacement using small incisions (Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement) and also acquired the skills of extracting pacing leads using laser technology during his time in Vancouver.
His interest in basic science started early on in his career and he has since made significant contributions to heart related scientific research through many important publications. He continues to be involved in this area and envisages in promoting research and innovation in the younger generation of surgery trainees in Singapore.
In early 2010, he returned to Singapore to join NUHCS as a consultant surgeon. Given his experience with TAVI in Vancouver, Dr. Hon is heavily involved in the start-up program for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in NUHCS.
Asst Prof Hon speaks fluent English, Mandarin, Hakka and Cantonese. He also fully understands Hokkien and Teochew.
