Dr Kristine Teoh Leok Kheng

MBBChir (Cantab.), MS (Lon.), FRCS (Eng.), FRCS (C-Th)

Consultant Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, NUHCS

Dr Kristine Teoh graduated from Cambridge University and undertook her Basic Surgical Training in England, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996. After her BST she entered into Cardiothoracic surgery in London, taking time out to enrol for a postgraduate research degree. She was awarded her Master of Surgery from the University of London in 2006, and obtained her FRCS(C-Th) in 2007. After completing her Specialist Registrar Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2008, she was admitted to the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register of Cardiothoracic surgeons.

Dr Teoh has trained at a number of prestigious Cardiothoracic units in London and has acquired broad experience in adult cardiac surgery, specifically coronary, valve, thoracic aortic and arrhythmia surgery; and in adult thoracic surgery, both open and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lung, pleural, mediastinal and chest wall disease.

Training and working in the UK, where the average age for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery is over 70 years, has also given Dr Teoh much experience in dealing with elderly patients. In addressing the challenge of working with elderly patients, she has led initiatives to improve the patient experience from initial referral up to the time of eventual discharge from post-operative follow-up. She has thus developed a special interest in improving healthcare provision, quality outcome measures, and innovative transcatheter therapies that avoid the need for major open surgery.

Since completing her training Dr Teoh has worked as a locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Heart Hospital, UCL Hospitals NHS Trust, and as Senior Fellow at the Royal Brompton Hospital. As a senior trainee and subsequently as locum Consultant she was a keen mentor, teacher and trainer of surgical trainees, nursing staff and allied health professionals.

Dr Teoh returned to Singapore in 2009 to join NUHS as a Consultant. Her clinical interests include:

  • Coronary artery surgery
  • Valve replacement and repair
  • Aortic root and thoracic aortic surgery
  • Transcatheter therapies (for aortic valve and thoracic aortic disease)
  • General thoracic surgery (excluding oesophageal)

In addition she has broader interests in:

  • Cardiac surgery in the elderly
  • Quality of life following cardiac surgery
  • Implementing and sustaining high quality healthcare provision
  • Research and innovation in cardiac surgery
  • Teaching and training of medical students, surgical trainees and allied health professionals
