Dr Tan graduated from the University of Singapore in 1977 and obtained his general surgical training in Singapore and Kent in the UK. His training in cardiac thoracic and vascular surgery began in 1982 under Prof HH Bentall at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School Hammersmith Hospital London. He further trained under Dr Hartzelll Schaff at the Mayo Clinic in the USA in 1990.
He has served in this speciality at the National Heart Centre in the Singapore General Hospital, the Hospital Besar Kuala Lumpur, the Klang General hospital, the National University Hospital, Mahkota Medical Centre Malacca, Mt Elizabeth Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital and the Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore.
He has published several papers and has spoken at numerous conferences. He is involved in various research projects in the department. At the National University of Singapore he was formerly Associate Professor and in now Clinical Senior Lecturer. He is the department Safety Officer, department Champion of Joint Commission International for accreditation, member of NUH New Surgical & Interventional Practice Committee. He is a Visiting Senior Consultant to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and is Supervisor to the junior surgeons and overseas surgeons under provisional registration. He worships God at Faith Methodist Church and goes fishing regularly.
Having extensive experience in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery, his special interests are in the complex and redo coronary artery bypass surgery, complex and redo heart valve surgery, ascending and arch aortic surgery, complex and minimally invasive lung operations, complex vascular operations.
