Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) – A/Prof Theodoros Kofidis, Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiac, Thoracic & Vascular Surgery

Less invasive heart procedures are now a valuable solution for many of our patients, with potential for less trauma, blood loss, infections, arrhythmias, hospital stay and a better cosmetic result. The National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) offers a platform to enable heart valve and bypass operations, as well as combinations thereof to be carried out through small keyhole incisions from the side, without splitting the entire chest bone.  They also add value from a health-economical point of view, as patients recover faster, leave the hospital earlier, and return to their full activities sooner.

Updates on Management of Heart Failure – Dr Lin Weiqin, Consultant, Department of Cardiology

Heart failure is a growing epidemic in Singapore and places a huge strain on our healthcare system. It is also one of the fastest growing fields in cardiology, with new drugs and devices being developed at neck-breaking speed. It is thus important for all healthcare professionals to understand the latest advancements in heart failure. This will allow us to provide evidence-based, beneficial treatment to heart failure patients while at the same time, understand the socio-economic impacts of such treatment. We will discuss how the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) provides end-to-end care for our patients living with heart failure and how that is applicable in the community.
