You may know of a friend or relative suffering or even dying from heart disease. This may not be surprising as heart disease is the number 1 cause of deaths in Singapore, accounting for about one-third of all deaths here.
In 2005, The Heart Fund, a sub-fund of NUHS Fund, was established by the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) to assist financially disadvantaged patients and to support continuous medical research and education programmes in the field of cardiovascular diseases.
Sufferers of heart disease undergo a mentally and emotionally distressing experience the moment they receive their diagnosis. Heart diseases not only require costly procedures, patients usually also have to accept long term medical treatments in order to maintain the longevity of their heart health. The bearing of medical costs is an additional burden borne by many who are struggling even with their current expenditure needs. Despite the availability of highly subsidised treatments in Singapore, these treatment costs remain a crucial worry for low-income families.
NUHCS Heart Fund steps in to provide financial assistance to these financially disadvantaged patients and their households when other avenues of financial support are not available or insufficient.
