Dr. Ivandito Kuntjoro is presently a Senior Consultant Cardiologist and the Director of Structural Heart Program at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). He obtained his basic medical degree from Airlangga University, Indonesia. Subsequently, he pursued his medical training in the United States. He was elected as a member of Kaplan Medical Honor Society in 2003 for his achievement in the US medical board examination and was awarded ECFMG certification in 2004 to practice medicine in USA.
Dr. Kuntjoro received both his internal medicine internship and residency training at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Ohio, USA. He was certified and has been a member of American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) since 2009. He worked as internal medicine attending physician at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, USA until 2012 before joining NUHCS for his advanced specialty training in cardiology. Upon completion of his cardiology training, he was awarded fellowship training in structural intervention at the Advanced Valve Center at University of Virginia (UVA) Medical Center, USA and trained under Scott Lim, MD who is one of the pioneer in structural heart intervention.
He is actively involved in the management of patients with complex valvular heart disease, with extensive expertise in minimally invasive, percutaneous catheter-based interventions. In addition to structural and valvular heart disease, he manages patients with congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, as well as patients with a broad spectrum of common cardiovascular conditions. He has extensive experience in a wide range of transcatheter structural heart interventions, including transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), valve-in-valve procedures, mitral and tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), as well as interventions for congenital structural heart conditions such as atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure. Since his appointment as Director of the Structural Heart Programme in 2021, he has played a key role in developing the programme into one of the highest-volume structural heart programmes, with a comprehensive range of transcatheter treatments for complex structural and valvular heart disease. He has also established a dedicated pulmonary embolism response team with a 24-hour on-call service, providing timely multidisciplinary management for patients with acute pulmonary embolism.
He has pioneered the use of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) as an imaging modality for structural heart interventions, allowing selected procedures to be performed without general anaesthesia and thereby reducing the procedural burden for patients.
He has extensive experience in managing complex structural heart disease using the latest technologies and advanced interventional techniques. His expertise includes the use of the newest-generation transcatheter valve platforms, contemporary mitral and tricuspid repair devices including TEER systems such as MitraClip and PASCAL, as well as advanced techniques such as leaflet modification strategies for high-risk TAVI procedures. His practice combines advanced imaging, contemporary device technology and innovative procedural techniques to provide personalised treatment for patients with complex structural and valvular heart disease.
He has authored and co-authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed book chapters to textbooks on structural heart intervention and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. He is frequently invited as a speaker and faculty member at regional and international conferences and educational meetings on structural heart intervention, where he shares his expertise and experience in the management of complex structural and valvular heart disease. He has also represented our center in international educational meetings by performing live TAVI cases from NUHCS to major international conferences such as AICT-PCR, showcasing the centre’s expertise in contemporary structural heart intervention.
He also serves as a proctor for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures in the region, providing procedural guidance and support to centres performing complex and challenging TAVI cases. His proctoring activities have allowed him to contribute to the development of structural heart programmes beyond his own institution and to share contemporary techniques and best practices with other centres in the region.
Clinical Assistant Professor Kuntjoro is also actively involved in medical education and training. He contributes to the education of medical students and the postgraduate training of cardiology fellows. He currently serves as the Director of the Structural Heart Fellowship Programme at the National University Heart Centre Singapore (NUHCS). The programme is highly regarded within the region and is one of the few comprehensive fellowship programmes dedicated to structural heart disease, providing fellows with extensive exposure to advanced imaging, structural heart assessment, transcatheter interventions, complex procedural planning and the management of patients with a broad spectrum of structural and valvular heart disease.
Through his clinical, academic, educational and regional contributions, he has played an important role in advancing structural heart intervention and developing the next generation of structural heart specialists in the region.
