"Trauma Surgery often involves helping the most vulnerable in our community, at the time of their greatest need. Quick decision making, leading a large multidisciplinary team, and rapid effective surgery to save a life is challenging. When we can, we are able to return a patient at the verge of losing their life, back to their loved ones and go on to live a full life. This is a privileged reward for me and my team. My other twin passion of Vascular Surgery also serves a group of patients with many challenges and complex medical problems.”
Dr Raj Kumar Menon is a Senior Consultant in the Trauma Service at the National University Hospital (NUH) and Centre Director of the National University Centre for Trauma (NUCeT). He also serves as Associate Chair (Medical Board), Director of Clinical Services for the Department of Surgery, Director of the Surgical High Dependency Unit, and Chair of the NUH Supportive and Palliative Care Taskforce. A Trauma and Vascular Surgeon, Dr Menon graduated from the National University of Singapore and completed his specialist training in General Surgery at NUH. He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and subsequently pursued advanced subspecialty training in Trauma and Vascular Surgery. In 2018, he was awarded the Academic Medicine Development Award and completed a fellowship in Advanced Trauma and Vascular Surgery at the Royal London Hospital, one of the United Kingdom's leading major trauma centres. In the same year, he completed a Master of Science in Trauma Sciences at Queen Mary University of London. Dr Raj's clinical practice focuses on the care of patients with major trauma and complex vascular conditions, with particular interests in damage control surgery, major haemorrhage, resuscitation, and the use of advanced endovascular techniques in trauma care. His academic interests include trauma systems development, trauma epidemiology, injury prevention, and the long-term physical and psychosocial consequences of injury. Beyond clinical practice, he plays a key role in advancing trauma care nationally and internationally. He serves as Clinical Director of Singapore's National Trauma Unit under the Ministry of Health and is President of the Asian Collaboration for Trauma (ACT) for the 2025-2026 term, an international consortium comprising trauma societies across Asia. Dr Raj is passionate about developing future generations of surgeons and healthcare leaders. He previously served as Associate Program Director of the NUHS General Surgery Residency Programme and continues to contribute as Core Faculty. He also led the NUHS Residency Leadership Development Programme (RLDP) and currently serves as an advisor to the programme. He remains actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. His current educational interests focus on the integration of simulation, mixed reality, and extended reality technologies into trauma and surgical training.
