Biosketch

Adj A/Prof William Kong Kok Fai graduated from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). He completed advanced specialist training in Cardiology at Christchurch Hospital and Wellington Hospital, and was subsequently admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).

Receiving the Academic Medicine Development Award (AMDA), Adj A/Prof Kong underwent advanced subspecialty training in interventional echocardiography and structural/valvular heart disease at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) in the Netherlands. He trained under the distinguished supervision of Dr. Victoria Delgado and Professor Jeroen J. Bax, past president of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). He later completed his PhD at LUMC, where his doctoral research examined the epidemiological, clinical, genetic, and imaging dimensions of bicuspid aortic valve disease and aortopathy.

Reflecting his international standing, Adj A/Prof Kong was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. His editorial leadership includes appointments as International Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging since 2022 and European Heart Journal - Imaging Methods and Practice since 2023.

Currently, Adj A/Prof Kong leads a weekly Specialist Valve Clinic at the National University Hospital (NUH), providing advanced transoesophageal, contrast, and stress echocardiography services. He is an integral member of the Heart Team, providing critical echocardiographic support for complex transcatheter structural heart therapies. From 2020 to 2026, he served as the Clinical Director of Echocardiography & Non-invasive Diagnostic Cardiology at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). He now serves as Clinician Mentor for the laboratory, guiding the incoming director and medical technicians. Globally, he serves the medical community as the Governor of the American College of Cardiology (Singapore Chapter).

An exceptionally prolific researcher, Adj A/Prof Kong has published over 200 papers indexed in PubMed. He has frequently authored first-person and primary papers in top-tier, high-impact medical journals, including the European Heart Journal, Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, and JAMA Cardiology. He regularly serves as a peer reviewer and invited editorial author for these leading publications. Globally, he acts as the primary investigator and clinical lead for multiple international clinical trials focused on valvular heart diseases and cardiomyopathies.

As a dedicated clinician educator and examiner at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Adj A/Prof Kong is actively involved in training and assessing medical students from years one through five. He also supervises clinical research and advanced training for senior residents and clinical fellows from Singapore and abroad.
