2026/03/06
What is cardiac catheterization?
Cardiac catheterization is an invasive procedure in which a thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel and advanced to the heart. It measures pressures, oxygen levels, and assesses the heart defect directly.
Why is it done?
To obtain precise measurements of the heart defect, assess its impact AV Canal Defect has on the heart, and plan for potential interventions like closure.
Does it hurt?
Local anaesthesia is used at the insertion site, so most patients experience minimal discomfort. The procedure is generally well-tolerated.
Potential risks and complications
Rare, but may include bleeding or damage to blood vessels.
