Needle Aspiration

2026/03/23
What is it?
A minimally invasive procedure to remove air from the pleural space using a needle, with local anaesthesia administered.
What should I prepare?
Minimal preparation required; inform medical team if you are on any blood thinners that could affect bleeding, or if you have any known allergies.
Success rate
Needle aspiration is generally effective for treating a first‑time, spontaneous collapsed lung. However, every case is different, and in some situations the lung may need extra help to fully re‑expand. When that happens, a chest tube is used as the next safe and standard step in care.
Potential risks and complications
Infection, bleeding.
Home care
Keep puncture site dry for 6 – 12 hours post-procedure and clean it normally after; avoid strenuous activities.
When to call the doctor?
If there is increased pain, fever, or signs of infection.
