Stay On Track To Keep Your Heart In Check

A safer and healthier fitness journey with NUHCS Sports Cardiology

PULSE Issue 47 | July 2026

Exercise has become more than just a fitness trend. From first-time runners to weekend cyclists and HYROX competitors, more people are embracing active lifestyles to improve their health and wellbeing.

While regular exercise is essential for heart health, pushing the body beyond its limits without proper guidance may increase cardiovascular risks, especially for individuals with underlying conditions or undetected heart disease. Understanding how to exercise safely is just as important as staying active.

At the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS), the Sports Cardiology Programme supports individuals in exercising safely and confidently through personalised assessments, medical screening and guided exercise planning tailored to each individual’s heart health and fitness goals. Whether beginning a fitness journey, returning to exercise after a cardiac event or training for endurance sports, individuals are guided to stay active with greater reassurance.

What is NUHCS Sports Cardiology?

A specialised medical service at NUHCS, focused on supporting individuals exercise safely while protecting their cardiovascular health. Rebuilding Strength Through Cardiac Rehabilitation

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrence and improve outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease, including those recovering from heart attacks. At NUHCS, the multidisciplinary Cardiac Rehabilitation team provides supervised training, education and personalised support for patients recovering from heart conditions or surgeries. Beyond physical recovery, the programme also helps patients rebuild confidence and adopt sustainable heart-healthy habits for the long term.

One inspiring example is 87-year-old Dr C. K. Murthy, a graduate of the programme, who successfully took part in a half-marathon in 2024 after undergoing two heart surgeries. His journey reflects how structured rehabilitation can support safe recovery and empower patients to return to the activities they love. (Refer to PULSE Issue 44, Page 22, to read more on Dr Murthy’s story.)

The Three Pillars of Cardiac Rehabilitation at NUHCS

  1. Education
Patients receive guidance on their condition, treatment plans, risk factors and advice on exercising safely during recovery.
  2. Counselling
Patients and caregivers are supported throughout recovery with advice, encouragement and practical guidance.
  3. Prescribed exercise training
Structured and supervised exercise programmes - patients are guided to rebuild their strength progressively and safely.

Why Exercise Matters For Your Heart?

Regular exercise strengthens the heart, improving its ability to pump oxygen-rich blood efficiently throughout the body. This supports better blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, and contributes to better long-term cardiovascular health.

A 30-minute brisk walk daily can help support a healthier heart and overall wellbeing.

Exercising Safely Starts with Understanding Your Heart

Whether preparing for a first 5km run, returning to exercise after a cardiac condition or striving for peak athletic performance, understanding your heart is an important step towards staying active safely and confidently. With personalised care, rehabilitation and guided support, NUHCS Sports Cardiology helps individuals pursue their fitness goals while prioritising long-term heart health and well-being.
