Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)

2026/03/18
What is it?
MAD is a custom mouthpiece that gently moves your lower jaw forward during sleep to keep your airway open. It’s mainly used for mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea or when Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy – an alternative treatment option – is not well tolerated.
What should I prepare?
You will need a dental evaluation, impressions of your teeth, and a sleep study where applicable to confirm suitability for this treatment. Devices are custom-made, and you will return for adjustments to gradually advance the jaw.
Success rate
MADs reliably reduce apnoea events and improve symptoms, though not as strongly as CPAP, but with higher acceptance amongst many patients. Many people experience meaningful improvements in snoring and daytime sleepiness.
Potential risks and complicatons
Side effects may include jaw discomfort, tooth or gum soreness, excess saliva, or bite changes, which often improve with adjustments. More serious issues are rare but can affect the jaw joint in some patients.
When to call the Doctor
If there is device discomfort, significant jaw pain, persistent bite changes, or if symptoms of sleep apnoea return.
