Echocardiography Fellowship Programme

Advanced Quantification: Gain expertise in myocardial assessment techniques, including:

• Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) and regional strain imaging 
• Early detection of myocardial dysfunction
• Cardio-oncology and cardiomyopathies surveillance and assessment

3D Echocardiography: Develop proficiency in:

• Real-time 3D image acquisition
• Multiplanar reconstruction (MPR)
• Volumetric analysis using state-of-the-art 3D datasets for structural and ventricular assessment

Structural Heart & Interventional Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): Gain extensive exposure to intra-procedural guidance and participate in pre-procedural planning for a wide range of complex structural heart interventions, including:

• Mitral and Tricuspid Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER)
• Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
• Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Closure
• Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure
• Percutaneous Transvenous Mitral Commissurotomy (PTMC) and Paravalvular Leak Closures

Stress Echocardiography: Gain hands-on experience in the performance and interpretation of:

• Exercise Stress Echocardiography (treadmill and bicycle)
• Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography (DSE) for the assessment of ischemia, viability, and low-flow, low-gradient valvular disease.
  

This programme is specifically designed for local and international cardiologists, senior cardiology trainees/registrars, or established physicians seeking advanced subspecialty training in echocardiography.

Applicants should have successfully completed a basic/general cardiology training programme. Prior foundational experience in Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE) and Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) are highly recommended, as this fellowship programme builds directly upon core competencies to achieve advanced subspecialist levels.

Clinical Exposure: Fellows will be immersed in a busy tertiary echocardiography laboratory managing a remarkably diverse case mix, including complex Valvular Heart Disease (VHD), advanced heart failure, hyperacute critical care pathology and cardiomyopathies.

Techniques / Procedures: Fellows will gain hands-on and interpretive mastery of advanced clinical modalities, including:

• Real-time 3D and 4D TTE and TEE imaging
• Advanced strain imaging
• Contrast echocardiography (for endocardial border delineation and myocardial perfusion)
• Comprehensive structural heart disease imaging screening 
• Live intra-op navigation.

Skills or Knowledge: Upon completion of the fellowship programme, fellows will be equipped to:

• Independently lead and manage an advanced echocardiography laboratory
• Participate effectively in multidisciplinary Heart Team discussions
• Perform comprehensive structural heart disease imaging assessments
• Generate high-quality diagnostic and procedural imaging reports
• Contribute to academic research and clinical innovation

High-Volume Structural Heart Hub: As a leading regional centre for transcatheter valve therapies, NUHCS provides exceptional exposure to cutting-edge structural procedures. Fellows work alongside experienced interventional cardiologists in hybrid operating theatres and catheterisation laboratories, developing advanced expertise in procedural imaging guidance.

Academic & Research Integration: Training is delivered by internationally recognised faculty who are actively involved in clinical research and education. Fellows receive mentorship and opportunities to participate in clinical research projects, local and international conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.

Tailored Mentorship: The fellowship combines structured competency-based training with the flexibility to lean deeper into specific tracks, such as advanced structural TEE or complex stress haemodynamic.

Upon successful completion of the fellowship requirements and satisfactory review of clinical case logs and competency assessments, fellows will be awarded a Certificate of Fellowship in Echocardiography from the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS).
