Heart Failure Fellowship Programme

Southeast Asian countries have among the highest prevalence of heart failure in the world, with the disease burden expected to continue rising in the coming years. There is therefore a growing need for qualified heart failure cardiologists across the region to set up and lead structured heart failure management programmes.
At the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS), we started our Heart Failure Fellowship Programme in 2021 with the aim of equipping cardiologists around the region with the essential knowledge and skills to battle this heart failure pandemic.
Heart failure fellows will be embedded within our heart failure team and be actively involved in the day-to-day clinical activities of our Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy Programme. Fellows will work alongside a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the comprehensive management of patients with heart failure and cardiomyopathy.
The programme provides comprehensive training across the spectrum of heart failure and cardiomyopathy care, including:
- Advanced heart failure management
- Cardio-renal syndrome/ diuretic resistance management, including use of ultrafiltration
- Acute heart failure care
- Cardiogenic shock management
- Chronic outpatient heart failure care
- Heart failure and cardiomyopathy research
We welcome applications from qualified cardiologists who have a keen interest in heart failure and cardiomyopathy care.
Key learning opportunities
Fellows will gain hands-on experience and exposure to:
- Invasive heart failure procedures, including right heart catheterisation and endomyocardial biopsy
- Diagnosis and management of various cardiomyopathies, including advanced cardiac imaging and cardiac genetics
- Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) in heart failure management
- Mechanical circulatory support devices
- Multidisciplinary management of complex heart failure and cardiomyopathy patients
- Clinical and research opportunities in heart failure and cardiomyopathy
During their fellowship, our previous fellows have found the programme both professionally rewarding and personally enriching, gaining valuable clinical experience in heart failure care and building friendships across borders. Many of them have also successfully presented their research projects at scientific meetings and published their work.
